Method: live DataForSEO mobile SERPs captured 2026-10-06 for sprinkler installation [city] in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas and Houston. The top 2 real contractor sites per market were deep-profiled at source level — structure, offers, CTAs, chat, schema, tracking. Directories, forums, marketplaces and off-trade fire-sprinkler results were skipped and logged in the SERP Landscape. Every claim below carries its source site.
1. Half the SERP is the wrong sprinkler — and the real lane is thin. LA’s top 10 organic carries two fire sprinkler companies (Edison Fire Protection #3, FirePro Tech #6) and a fire-protection firm sits in the map pack (Reliable Fire Protection 5.0/29); the Phoenix PAA mixes “What are the fire sprinkler requirements in the City of Phoenix?” with lawn-sprinkler cost questions. 20 of 36 organic slots are directories or tools (Yelp, Thumbtack, BBB, HomeGuide, Expertise, Nextdoor, cost calculators). Only 16 real landscape-irrigation sites exist across the four markets — 8 of them are profiled here. A pure-play “lawn & landscape irrigation, not fire sprinklers” entity with clean schema is nearly alone in its lane.
2. Published pricing is the conversion superpower — and only 2 of 8 have it. RototillerGuy (LA #4) runs a custom self-serve square-footage bid plugin with published per-zone pricing ($525/zone, $275 repair minimum, per-valve/timer prices) plus an underground-utilities waiver — the strongest conversion asset in the study. Rhino Home Services (HOU #7) publishes layout pricing ($2,700–$3,300 for 8 zones, $3,600–$4,200 corner homes) right into its search snippets. Everyone else sells “free estimates” while every PAA box in every market asks how much it costs. Price transparency plus an instant-quote path is uncontested.
3. The map pack is a reviews + booking-tech game — and LSA now buys the Texas packs. Benchmarks: LA 5.0/251 with a Jobber booking link (Smart Sprinkler Repair), Phoenix 5.0/262 with Jobber (Scottsdale Flow), Dallas 4.9/223 LSA-paid (Elite) under a full Local Services block (Lawn Sense 4.8/2,200 — veteran-owned, “Open 24 hours”; Conserva 4.9/230 — “Free estimate”), Houston with a 5.0/1,900 ServiceTitan-booking competitor (Southwest Irrigation) and an LSA-paid #1 advertising “Beat or match price”. On their own sites only 1 of 8 offers booking at all (Sprinkler Doctors’ Kickserv iframe). The map pack shows more tech than the websites do.
4. Licenses and coverage guarantees are the trust currency — schema is almost absent. RototillerGuy prints C27 lic. #974733 on every page; Dallas Landscape and Irrigation runs TCEQ-certified irrigators, $1M insurance and the guarantee verbatim: “100% (head to head) coverage GUARANTEED on all of our work. Something goes wrong, we are liable not you.”; SprinklerAndOutdoorServices puts LI22993 in the logo lockup; Houston Sprinkler Repair Pros publishes TX license L10020559 and Hunter/Rain Bird parts trust. Yet 7 of 8 ship bare or zero LocalBusiness schema (Pro Sprinklers WebSite-only, Houston Sprinkler Repair Pros zero, Dallas Landscape and Irrigation none) — Rhino’s Service + FAQPage + per-city AggregateRating is the lone exception.
5. Smart controllers, rebates and watering rules are the open content lane — and template leakage is everywhere. RototillerGuy’s 44-post blog (Rachio, Rain Machine, backflow, leak detection) is the only real content engine in the study. Nobody covers utility water rebates, city watering restrictions (Dallas PAA: “What are the watering rules in Dallas?”), winterize/freeze protocols (Houston), smart-controller setup or drip-conversion guides as a cluster — while the LA map-pack leader is literally named “Smart Sprinkler Repair” and every market’s related searches say “smart sprinkler”. Meanwhile Sprinkler Installation Phoenix ships placeholder footer contact (“handyman@mail.com”) and leftover /plumbing /electrical1 template links; SprinklerAndOutdoorServices is a 9-page Wix stub with fake San Francisco contact info and an indexed members area full of injected spam (summarized, not quoted); Pro Sprinklers reuses one H1 and one meta across 13 pages with sequential phone numbers in its titles. Being clean is differentiation.

SERP Landscape

Term: sprinkler installation [city] — mobile, depth 10, captured 2026-10-06 (DataForSEO). Map pack top 3 with rating / review counts first, then the organic order with type badges. Skipped entries are listed as context — their dominance is finding #1.

LSA layer (Dallas & Houston): a Google Local Services block sits above the Dallas pack — Lawn Sense 4.8/2,200 (veteran-owned, “Open 24 hours”, military discount), Conserva Irrigation of Northwest Dallas 4.9/230 (woman-owned, “Free estimate”), Elite 4.9/223 (“Flat rate pricing”), Texas Golden Irrigation 4.9/36 (“Licensed & insured”). Houston’s #1 pack slot is itself LSA-paid (“Free estimate · Beat or match price”). Google-Guaranteed badges are arriving in irrigation exactly as they did in tree service. Also worth noting: 4th-place Houston (Southwest Irrigation Systems, 5.0/1,900) is the strongest review operation in the study and books through ServiceTitan.

Headline: 20 of 36 organic listings are directories, forums or cost tools — and the LA market leaks fire-sprinkler results into both the pack and the organic 10. The map pack is winnable (251 and 262 reviews lead two markets) but LSA is buying the Texas results and the pack already runs Jobber/ServiceTitan booking links. The unclaimed lanes: published pricing, disambiguation content, watering-rule and rebate pages.

Ultimate Irrigation & Smart Sprinkler Site Spec

Assembled from the best of all 8 profiled sites with the field’s shared failures excluded. Items marked gap are uncontested across the whole field.

1. Site Architecture

2. Homepage Anatomy (top to bottom)

  1. Sticky header: phone, Free Estimate button, license number (RototillerGuy prints C27 #974733 sitewide).
  2. Hero: H1 with service + city, review badge (rating + count), quote CTA + click-to-call.
  3. Trust band: Licensed & Insured + coverage guarantee (Dallas Landscape and Irrigation’s “100% head-to-head coverage GUARANTEED”) + parts brands (Hunter / Rain Bird / Rachio — Houston Sprinkler Repair Pros pattern).
  4. Services grid with Smart Controllers and Installation called out.
  5. Published-pricing / instant-quote block (RototillerGuy’s bid tool).
  6. Install process explainer (Sprinkler Installation Phoenix runs a clean 6-step one — keep the process, delete the template).
  7. Embedded Google reviews with owner replies (Dallas Landscape and Irrigation’s Trustindex embed).
  8. Guarantee + maintenance-plan strip (Sprinkler Doctors’ spring startup / fall winterization plans).
  9. Seasonal strip: winterization, spring startup, watering rules, rebates.
  10. Service areas: linked city list.
  11. Cost-guide links answering the PAA questions.
  12. Final CTA: phone + short form + hours. Footer: license #, insurance, hours, service areas.

3. Offer Stack

Read the columns: Membership, Booking and Chat are near-empty across the whole field — the recurring tier and the booking convenience are products nobody has built (the map pack already links Jobber and ServiceTitan, so the demand side is proven). Schema is one bright spot (Rhino) in the dark — free rich results for the first clean template. And the Offers column splits the field in two: the two sites that publish pricing (RototillerGuy, Rhino) are the two with the strongest conversion stories in the study.

Next Steps

  1. Format check: passes — same chrome, sidebar and section order as the HVAC reference report (dropsites-hvac-teardown.pages.dev).
  2. Template feed: the Ultimate Site Spec above becomes the Irrigation template upgrade list — published per-zone pricing + instant-quote tool (RototillerGuy), coverage-guarantee trust band (Dallas Landscape and Irrigation), license number in the header (C27/LI/TCEQ patterns), Jobber/ServiceTitan-grade online booking matched to the map pack, smart-controller + watering-rule + rebate content hub (the open lane), service × city silo with unique subheaded content (Sprinkler Doctors’ clean pattern), disambiguation copy against fire-sprinkler contamination.
  3. Recurring tier: winterization / spring-startup / controller-monitoring maintenance plans are sold by 1 of 8 profiled sites (Sprinkler Doctors) — Dallas Landscape and Irrigation’s $90 yearly checkup is the natural entry point. Price the recurring tier against the field’s absence, not against a competitor.
  4. Snapshots: DataForSEO pulls are point-in-time (2026-10-06). LSA blocks and AI Overviews can shift quickly and the LA fire-sprinkler contamination may be transient — re-pull before comparing across time.
